3 Beauty Habits to Start in Your 20s

Do you feel like your skin is not what it used to be? Or maybe you’ve noticed changes in your complexion that have come with aging, or the frustrating onset of adult acne! You’re not alone!

When transitioning out of youth into adulthood, it’s normal to notice new developments in your skin. It’s likely that you may need to adjust your beauty routine to help prevent signs of aging and keep your youthful glow.

Skincare Makes a Difference

While you may not have had to give as much attention to your skin at a younger age, or your focus may have been towards treating typical teenage hormonal acne, as an adult it’s important to start being more active in your attention to your skin if you haven’t already.

Here are 3 important ways to boost your beauty routine and care for your skin everyday!

Eat your way to glowing skin

What we eat everyday doesn’t just affect our insides, it affects the health of outsides too!

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and it requires many nutrients to stay healthy. Just like the heart, brain, and liver do.

While many nutrients are important for our body’s health, and thus our skin, there are few key players that can really give you that glow!

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3’s are essential fatty acids that are the building blocks of healthy cell membranes. Eating them in your diet from sources like fish, nuts, and seeds may reduce your skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet rays. (aka less sunburns!), reduce the likelihood of skin inflammation (aka acne or redness), and help keep your skin hydrated

Zinc

Zinc is a powerful antioxidant mineral that can help fight inflammation from acne inducing bacteria. That’s why you may notice it in a lot of skincare products, but it’s also important to be eating it as a regular part of your diet! You can get zinc from shellfish (like oysters and shrimp), meat, poultry, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and more!

Vitamin A

As you age, your skin’s collagen production decreases which leads to less elastic skin that is more susceptible to wrinkles. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient that helps support collagen production, making it very important for slowing skin aging! It also plays a role in keratin production, which is a huge component of our skin cells. Retinol/retinoid are derivatives of vitamin A, which is why you may have seen these in many topical skin care applications. But like any nutrient, getting them from your diet is a must! You can fulfill your vitamin A needs from leafy green vegetables like kale and spinach, from colorful vegetables like carrots or pumpkin, as well as eggs, and some fruits.

It continues with daily protection

Depending on where you grew up, it might have been a common activity as a kid to slather yourself in tanning oil and lay in the sun for hours during the warm months.

Unfortunately, continuing to do this as an adult will cause your skin to wrinkle, age, and discolor quicker and quicker.

Not to mention, it continually increases your risk of skin cancer!

Especially on days when you are outside exposing your skin more to the elements, it’s vital that you use sunscreen to prevent aging.

Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still impact your skin!

Although it depends on where you live and what time of year it is for how much SPF you will need, aim for at least 30 SPF.

Finding a quality sunscreen that doesn’t have harmful ingredients can be hard, but here’s some with cleaner ingredients that we recommend:

Another popular way of protecting your skin daily is with a moisturizer that contains SPF protection in it. Isn’t it great when you can combine two steps of your beauty routine into one??

Update your daily beauty routine

If you don’t have a skincare routine before bed and after you wake up, it’s time to start one!

Here are some important products to consider adding to your beauty routine:

  • Retinol: Invest in a quality retinol product, which can help increase your skin cell turnover to brighten your complexion and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Eye cream: Keeping an eye cream on hand before bed is also important, since the skin around your eyes can show signs of aging more quickly due to years of squinting and constant eye movement.
  • Antioxidant serum: Your skin is met with a lot of toxicants each day, like pollution, harsh manufacturing chemicals, and pesticides. Using an antioxidant serum in the morning can help reduce the damage that these toxicants can cause, especially if you live in a bigger city!
  • Exfoliation: Make sure you’re exfoliating at least once if not twice a week, to ensure that you are removing the buildup of dead skin cells to keep your skin soft and less prone to breakouts
